FAQ

Get your answers here! When placing an order, please always read the full description of each item listing for specific clay, measurement, and care details. For a welcome video from me plus more details about this fundraiser, my journey, and how you can help, see Meet Gab + Ways to Support.

Fun facts first: All orders include a hand typed thank you note from me that is written with love from my 1946 Smith Corona Sterling typewriter. Imagine the clickety-clack! It's my favorite. Writing, poetry, good people, Mother Nature, travel, and transforming clay from mud into magic are among my greatest passions.

Are Ceramics by Gab food/dishwasher/microwave safe?

Yes. Ceramics by Gab are non-toxic, food safe, and dishwasher / microwave safe. However, it is best practice to hand wash delicate ceramics with warm soapy water for longevity and avoid harsh detergents. Always exercise caution when removing ceramics with hot food or liquid inside from a microwave, as heat can transfer through the walls making the piece hot to the touch at first.

What type of clay is used in the creation of Ceramics by Gab?

Ceramics by Gab are made using two variations of Stoneware, a light clay body called B Mix with Speckles, and a darker clay body called Speckled Buff. Glaze interacts with each clay differently, producing a variety of unique, one-of-a-kind results. The joys of handmade!  No two pieces are the same.

Can I use my Ceramics by Gab for oven cooking?

No. Do not expose Ceramics by Gab to sudden/extreme temperature changes. Placing pieces into a pre-heated oven or atop an open flame can cause unintended cracking and further damage. Stoneware clay, unlike Flameware, is not as resistant to thermal shock. Handle with care.

Where are handmade Ceramics by Gab made? Is production costly?

Ceramics by Gab are made with love in San Francisco, California inside of a beautiful studio called Clay By the Bay. I took my first beginner class here in January 2022 before transitioning to a paid monthly membership to grow my skills during open studio hours on my own time. When assessing pricing, please be aware that CBTB charges $295/month for their membership (not including the price of clay or majority of glazes I use). SF is an expensive city and I am 9+ months into job hunting after a tech layoff. Your support will help me maintain access to the pottery wheel and my sanity.

How long does it take to create each piece? What does it entail?

It varies. Each piece undergoes a process that includes: wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, a first kiln firing, footer waxing, painting/glazing multiple layers, a second kiln firing, and the sanding of raw clay bottoms to ensure they are smooth and surface-safe. The hand made creation of each piece takes place over several weeks, so exact production and delivery estimates are not available at this time.

Can I commission XYZ from you? I don't see it listed in your shop!

Maybe! Be patient. I genuinely love making commissioned items, but my priority right now is sharing my current inventory with you.

What about pre-orders?

Specific pre-order options will be opening TOMORROW, 8/18! I am actively working on setting up separate pre-order listing for items such as Mushbloom Mugs, Donut Vases, Earth Drip Mugs, and smaller items like personalized ash trays and jewelry dishes upon request. I'd like to track these future orders within the website alongside everything else.

How much does shipping cost?

When your order is ready, it will ship to you ASAP via USPS Priority Mail for a rate of $15 and a tracking link will be provided. U.S. shipping only.

Can you rush the creation/shipping of my Ceramics by Gab order?

Not really. Since Ceramics by Gab are fired in a community studio, I am not in control of how quickly each piece moves through its two required kiln firings. It depends how much other member/student work is waiting before mine on the shelves, but CBTB is often speedy! I will get things to you as fast as I am able. Note: Production will be paused during the week of 8/28–9/4 and resume after.

Why is the *Mushbloom Mug* design priced higher than others?

Mushbloom Mugs are the most expensive design due to the laborious hand painting and glaze layering process. This design uses multiple colorful glazes (not studio provided) that *each* require 3 layers of paint, dried in between. The dreamy, drippy result takes at least twice as long to produce as everything else in my inventory and is the most fun to look at! I am excited to make more unique varieties.
